In the Shadow of Jezebel by Mesu Andrews6/27/2023 Jehoiada would have served as priest during the height of faithful King Jehoshaphat’s reign in Judah: I believe Jehoiada relates to the cynic in us all, those who long for the good ol’ days and can become hopeless if we focus too far into the future. Something about the character must feel familiar in your own life. Sounds especially uplifting, don’t you think? How Jehoiada Relates…įor a character to leap off the page-and into your heart-you must relate to him or her. He’s weary of serving the Lord with little in return, and he’s sick of sinful people getting blessed. In fact, he’s a bit crotchety and years past his prime.įantastic, right? Can’t wait to read it? There’s more… He’s not mild-mannered, wealthy, or particularly good looking. If we compared this guy to comic-strip heroes, he’s neither Clark Kent nor Bruce Wayne. Ummm, not so with the hero of my March 2014 release, In the Shadow of Jezebel. Most novel heroes are dashing young men with rippling muscles and charming wit.

Like a mother book angela garbes6/25/2023 And when COVID-19 rocked the foundation of her writing life (as she, her two young daughters, and her husband established a new normal in their Seattle home), she realized there was more she needed to say on the topic-enough to fill an entire book, it turned out. Garbes, who is Filipina American and addresses some of the inequities mothers and women of color face in her first book, didn’t want to be pigeonholed into writing solely about motherhood, as it’s only one aspect of her life. Her breakout book, Like a Mother, a 2018 NPR Best Book of the Year, was a candid feminist take on the cultural myths and science surrounding pregnancy. The passionate essay took a stark look at how 5.4 million women had lost their jobs since the COVID-19 pandemic began-and how the lockdown played out in Garbes’s life as a mother and writer of color. When writer Angela Garbes penned “The Numbers Don’t Tell the Whole Story” for New York Magazine in February 2021, she had no idea that the piece would be heralded and shared by the likes of Melinda Gates and Elizabeth Warren. Shadow and bone book 16/25/2023 I wanted to grab all the characters by both ears and shake them, as they settled into an angsty holding pattern. The plot wobbles about in a repeating loop. While many trilogies suffer from a saggy middle book, this really took the cake. responsibility and individuality ties it all together. Some tropes are later explained in believable and imaginative ways. An interesting background cast, particularly Genya and Baghra, help flesh out the story. The Darkling has black hair and grey eyes. It’s the type of book where you can predict the characters personalities by their hair color (Mal has brown hair and green eyes. The characters are compelling, if a bit one-dimensional. The love interests have perfect jaws and lean muscles and piercing eyes.īut it’s fun. YA troupes abound: there is a plain, insecure, yet plucky heroine named Alina, who it just so happens, is The Chosen One. The bright side kim holden6/25/2023 I honestly didn’t know what to expect based on the description of the book when I ordered it. Actually she made me curl up in the fetal position and bawl like a baby for a good thirty minutes after I finished reading Bright Side. I can count on one hand the amount of times I have cried since 2015 began. Due to Tim crunches I could not read the first half of the book and give it my undivided attention, however the second half crushed down on me and made me feel emotions I thought I had buried long ago. Well, except maybe not giving it the proper amount of time. When i looked it up I decided to go ahead and purchase it on my Amazon Kindle and I regret nothing. I discovered Kim Holden’s book Bright Side on the C&B Facebook page when someone was asking about it. |
